Homegoing has been the best book of the "Let's read in English" challenge so far! At least in my opinion. Yaa Gyasi follows the family tree of two half sisters from colonial Africa to modern times. Both were born in African villages but the turns their lives take could not have been more different.

In my village we have a saying about seperated sisters. They are like a woman and her reflection, doomed to stay on opposite sides of the pond.“ (S. 39) Der Pond ist natürlich hier der Atlantik.

Epic in its canvas and intimate in its portraits, Homegoing is a searing and profound debut from a masterly new writer. 'This incredible book travels from Ghana to the US revealing how slavery destroyed so many families, traditions and lives - and how its terrifying impact is still reverberating now.
3.3 Where areas have not yet achieved a good level of economic development, the causes of the situation can be very varied: a peripheral location, extreme environmental conditions, insufficient infrastructure, a local population lacking in entrepreneurship and finally a whole group of factors that have caused and continue to cause the local population to migrate to areas with more ...

“We believe the one who has power. He is the one who gets to write the story. So when you study history, you must ask yourself, Whose story am I missing? Whose voice was suppressed so that this voice could come forth? Once you have figured that out, you must find that story too. From there you get a clearer, yet still imperfect, picture.”
